What Is The Oriental Institute?


The Oriental Institute is a division of the University of Chicago devoted to the study of the languages and history of the ancient Near East (ancient Egypt, Palestine and Israel, Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Persia). Since its foundation by James Henry Breasted in 1919, the Institute has sponsored archaeological excavations in every country of the Middle East, and has been a leader in the study and instruction of ancient Near Eastern languages.
