THE GÖLTEPE / KESTEL PROJECT

SWORDS, ARMOR, AND FIGURINES

This t-shaped pedant from the late Chalcolithic/EB I level of Tell Judeidah in southcentral Turkey was probably made from metal extracted from the Taurus ore fields. More than a 1000 years before the Hittites established their industrial operations, miners were already at work in these same rich deposits. Early artifacts come from disparate locations---Tarsus, Tell Raqa'i, and Tell Judeidah---suggesting that a number of sites exploited the same ore.
