The Oriental Institute Publications Office announces ELECTRONIC PUBLICATIONS ON-LINE, selected publications to be distributed online as an experimental foray into the electronic dissemination of its titles. This manner of distribution, Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) and the titles suitable for it, will be evaluated during calendar year 2001.

The first title is: SAOC 45: Thus Wrote 'Onchsheshonqy - An Introductory Grammar of Demotic (Third Edition), Janet H. Johnson.

A dissertation proposal by Hratch Papazian, presented to The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago, and approved in Oct 1999, entitled The "Per Shena": From Palace Estate to Sacred Storehouse. The Structure and Evolution of an Ancient Egyptian Economic Institution is now available.

September 8, 2000

The Persian Gallery of the Oriental Institute Museum will open to the public on September 9, 2000 following a four year renovation project. The 1500-square foot gallery displays approximately 1000 objects dating from the Archaic Susiana Period (ca. 6800 B.C.) to the Islamic Period (ca. 1000 A.D.). The installation of climate control systems to the museum enabled many fragile objects of bone and metals to be exhibited for the first time. The gallery space was designed by Vinci/Hamp Architects of Chicago. New cases, constructed of walnut, were designed by Vinci/Hamp Architects and built by Helmut Guenschel of Baltimore.

Information regarding the upcoming Special Exhibition: Treasures from the ROYAL TOMBS of UR, at the Oriental Institute Museum from Oct 21, 2000 through Jan. 21, 2001, is now available. This is a Traveling Exhibition Organized by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Better late than never, the 1996-1997 Oriental Institute Annual Report, the 1997-1998 Oriental Institute Annual Report, and the 1998-1999 Oriental Institute Annual Reportare now available. Links to their respective entires have also been added to homepages of numerous Institute archaeological and philogical projects and departments.

A new Institute archaeological excavation in Syria, the Qinnasrin Project, now has a homepage.

A new discussion entitled IS A TANNAITIC MASTER REFERRED TO BY NAME IN THE SIMEON BEN KOSIBA PAPYRI?, by Prof. Norman Golb, is now available. It offers new readings of Murabba'at papyrus 24, revealing for the first time, inter alia, the name of an early rabbinic figure in the Bar Kokhba texts.
