In spite of the progressive nature of the scholarship and curatorial work at the Oriental Institute, the Museum has deliberately maintained its traditional look, emphasized by the wooden exhibit cases. In 1996, the galleries closed as the Museum embarked upon a renovation project and the installation of climate control systems into the galleries and storage areas. When the galleries reopen to the public 1998, the understated and sophisticated appearance of the exhibits will be retained. However, visitors will see significant changes. The introduction of climate control will enable a greater variety of fragile Egyptian objects, including more mummies, papyri and textiles to be exhibited.
