The Initial Stages Of Using The Egyptian Gallery To Store All Museum Artifacts During The Renovation And Building Project
The Egyptian Gallery of the Oriental Institute was closed to the public in February 1996 in preparation for a major renovation of the building, include the installation of climate control and the construction of a 14,000 square foot addition to the south side of the building. To safeguard the collections during construction, all exhibits were dismantled and the artifacts were packed. This view of the Egyptian gallery, taken in May 1996 shows the gallery partially filled with boxed artifacts. The exhibit cases have been grouped at the east end of the gallery. The tall wooden box is a protective barrier built around the 17 foot tall statue of Tutankhamun.
