Ayla: Art and Industry in the Islamic Port of Aqaba

The special exhibit "Ayla: Art and Industry in the Islamic Port of Aqaba" highlights the Oriental Institute excavations at Aqaba Jordan under the direction of Dr. Donald Whitcomb. The artifacts which date from the 7th through the 11th centuries A.D. illustrate patterns of trade, settlement, commerce and industry between the Red Sea port and Egypt, Arabia and the Indian Ocean. Objects include a reconstructed kiln and its products, coins, lamps, steatite vessels, weights and objects of glass and ivory. The exhibit will be travel to Jordan where it will become a feature of the visitor's center at the archaeological site.
