Jones" Subject: ane Cat. of the WA Seals in the BM, 5 From Dominique Collon Dominique Collon: Catalogue of the Western Asiatic Seals in the British Museum, Cylinder Seals V. Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Periods, London, British Museum Press, 2001; 204 pp. text, XLVIII plates of photographs inclusing enlargements. This volume is the fifth in a series publishing the cylinder seal collection in the Department of the Ancient Near East (formerly Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities) in the British Museum. Fully described and illustrated are 400 Syrian, Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian and Urartian seals of the first half of the first millennium BC, which form the largest collection of provenanced seals of the period. The majority are published here for the first time, making this an essential resource for scholars of the Ancient Near East. Like Vols II and III, the catalogue includes a detailed analysis and discussion of the materials by Margaret Sax of the British Museum Department of Scientific Research. Vol. I (pre-Akkadian), by D.J. Wiseman, is out of print and a new updated volume is in preparation. Vol. II (Akkadian, Post-Akkadian and Ur III), by Dominique Collon, is out of print. Vol. III (Isin-Larsa and Old Babylonian), by Dominique Collon, is still available. Vol. IV (2nd mil. other than Old Babylonian) , by Edith Porada and Dominique Collon, is in preparation. Vol. VI (Pre-Achaemenid and Achaemenid), by P.H. Merrillees, will be going to press shortly. The UK price for Vol. V is £90; the US price is $150 (there will be a delivery charge on top which can be quoted separately if required). (Showing Latin >>parallel.) That link is not as secure as it might seem to be be at first glance. The Latin words have in common an earlier root meaning "three" or "beside" rather than a root originally referring to the male gonads. As I understand it, "testis" ("witness") very likely does not actually derive from "testis" ("gonad"), nor vice versa.
