Speakers IRAQ: Prof. Hans Nissen (Berlin) Prof. Mitchell Rothman (Widener Univ., Chester PA) Dr. Renate Gut (Halle) SYRIA and the LEVANT: Dr. Johannes Boese (Saarbrucken) Dr. G. van Driel (or Dr. C. van Driel-Murray; Leiden) Dr. J.L. Oates (Cambridge) a member of the Jerablus Tahtani project Dr Graham Philip (Durham) TURKEY: Prof. Marcella Frangipane (Rome) Prof. Gil Stein (NW Univ., Evanston IL) IRAN AND THE GULF: Dr Virginia Badler (Pennsylvania) Dr Jane Killick (Bahrain) GENERAL: Prof. Holly Pittman (Pennsylvania) Prof. Henry Wright (Michigan) Prof. Stephen Shennan (University College, London) The Uruk period in the fourth millennium BC in the Near East is a period of critical social change. The first urban centres in the world appear in southern Mesopotamia and there are also indications of increasing complexity in adjacent regions. The Uruk material culture of southern Mesopotamia appears at many sites in this surrounding area, in contrast and addition to the locally developed assemblages. The interpretation of the archaeological evidence is of key importance to anyone interested the development of social complexity. This two-day conference brings together some of the key academics working on this material. The conference will concentrate on the artefactual repertoires of several of the major Uruk sites in north and south Mesopotamia and beyond its borders, with a view to concentrating attention on the interrelationship of social complexity and the production and exchange of artefacts. The speakers will include scholars excavating at Uruk sites as well as those with more synthetic topics. The conference will aim to evaluate existing interpretations critically in the context of new evidence and to point the way towards new avenues of inquiry. Prof. Shennan will act as an external moderator. The conference will begin at 11am in Allen Hall in the Fallowfield campus of the University of Manchester on Friday the 6th November and continue until late afternoon on Saturday the 7th November. Reasonably priced lunches are available for both days and there is an optional conference dinner on the Friday evening. Cost £25 (£12.50 student/unwaged).
