Games and Game Playing in the Ancient World 2nd Annual Graduate Student Symposium at the University of Wisconsin-Madison February 22nd and 23rd, 2002 The wide semantic range of _paizein_ and _ludere_ illustrates the pervasiveness of literal and metaphorical game playing in antiquity. Even the most serious members of society devoted time to the more trivial pursuits. Game playing as a theme allows us to consider figures from Nausicaa to Nero, Plato to Propertius, warriors to gamblers, and symposiasts to potters in a common light: all are players on their respective playgrounds, whether at Olympia, on a Black Figure krater, on the battlefield, or within a text. This conference seeks to explore the many facets of play and gaming in antiquity from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. We encourage submissions from many disciplines including classics, archaeology, art history, philosophy, ancient history and Medieval and Renaissance studies. We invite you to consider the following: The Players Their Playgrounds The Playthings Artisans The Symposium Words Gladiators The Stage Astragaloi/Tali Warriors The Amphitheater Lovers Authors Marble/Clay Weapons Lovers The Page Dolls/Toys Gamblers Funeral Games Wagers Poets The Battlefield Audience Children The Racecourse Poetry Papers should be 15 minutes in length, those with slides 20 minutes. Abstracts should be one page (500-600 words) with no identifying information apart from title. Please send three copies of the abstract plus cover letter with title, identifying information, AV needs and length of paper. Abstracts must be postmarked by Oct. 31st.
