Jones" Subject: anenews CD-ROM "Egyptological Bibliography" From: Willem Hovestreydt We are pleased to announce the publication of the CD-ROM "Egyptological Bibliography". The CD-ROM comprises all volumes of the "Annual Egyptological Bibliography", from 1947 up to the most recent volume covering 1997. In addition the CD-ROM contains all titles from Christine Beinlich-Seeber's "Bibliographie AltŠgypten 1822-1946", the printed version of which appeared in 1998 in three volumes. Listing over 60,000 titles, the CD-ROM offers a detailed survey of Egyptological scholarly production from 1822 on, the year in which Champollion announced his decipherment of the hieroglyphic script. The CD-ROM comes with a user-friendly search engine, enabling users to conduct searches in both bibliographies, simultaneously or individually, and offering a broad range of search options. To assist the user there are detailed indexes of e.g. authors, periodicals, collected essays and Festschriften, geographical names, gods, etc. Users can also enter their own search terms, which, in combination with Boolean operators, allows detailed searches for specific subjects. The search engine has a built-in dictionary, which makes it possible to conduct search operations in three languages simultaneously. The CD-ROM also contains a number of bibliographies on special subjects. There are lists of Arabic titles and publications from the Iberian peninsula, as well as bibliographies of Amarna, Deir el-Medina, and Old Kingdom mastabas. The CD-ROM runs under Windows 95 or higher. If there is sufficient interest, a MacIntosh version may be produced later on. The CD-ROM is published by the Netherlands Institute for the Near East. Jones" Subject: anenews University of Minnesota cuneiform tablet collection on the Web From Eva von Dassow Since it was the subject of an oblique allusion in the Chronicle of Higher Ed article ("Silicon Babylon") passed on to this list by Maynard Maidman yesterday, it seems appropriate now to announce the web site newly created to showcase the cuneiform collection of the University of Minnesota. The address is: On these web pages, constructed by my student Matthew Buell, the cuneiform tablets and cones belonging to the University of Minnesota are effectively republished in digitized form. I chose to imitate the format and content of print text editions, and to do so in a way that might serve the interests of the general public as well as cuneiformists. Hence, for each artifact there is a catalogue entry followed by side-by-side transliteration and translation, notes which pop up in little windows if you call for them with a click, and digital photographs. The site is prefaced with an introduction and provided with other apparatus allowing the user to follow interesting links. It is, though launched, still a work in progress, and some portions are not yet complete, for which the authors ask your indulgence. We also welcome suggestions for improvement of the web presentation as well as corrections of any errors we have made. Please direct any comments or queries as follows: - -- about the text editions, write to Eva von Dassow - -- about the web site, links, etc., write to Matthew Buell, - -- anything to do with Edgar Banks, write to Mark Gill - -- and if that doesn't cover it, contact Tim Johnson, Curator of Special Collections and Rare Books . In closing, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge Marcel Sigrist's kind assistance with the text editions, and to invite further scrutiny thereof now that they are accessible to all in cyberspace.
