The examples of Egyptian painting displayed in the first two volumes cover a period of some sixteen hundred years, from the very beginning of the Fourth Dynasty (circa 2700 B.C.) down to the end of the Twentieth Dynasty (1100 B.C.). The selection of the one hundred and four specimens of Egyptian paintings is described by Gardiner in this volume.
