Managing Director For the Afghan Heritage Mapping Project (AHMP)

The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Managing Director for the Afghan Heritage Mapping Project. This is a three-year position with the possibility of extension. The Project is funded by the US Department of State with two main goals: a) the use of satellite imagery to develop a comprehensive map and GIS database of all identifiable archaeological sites in Afghanistan, and b) the training of Afghan archaeologists and heritage professionals in the methods of landscape archaeology, satellite image processing for archaeological site detection, and GIS. Project work will be conducted in Kabul, Afghanistan and in Chicago at the Oriental Institute.

Applicants must have expertise and practical experience in archaeological research and archaeological/cultural heritage preservation projects. Regional focus on the Middle East is preferred but not required. As Field Director of the newly founded AHMP, the successful applicant should have practical experience in at least some of the following areas: landscape archaeology, site survey, cultural heritage preservation, capacity building/training, efforts to combat the illicit antiquities trade, and experience working with local governments. The position requires extensive international travel for 1-2 month training sessions in Afghanistan. The successful applicant may also be asked to teach up to two courses per year on aspects of remote sensing, landscape archaeology, or cultural heritage preservation.
