"E is for Egyptomania"

Bob Andresen

The phenomenon of "Egyptomania" is often considered to be a modern fad, perhaps based on the 1922 discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, or the public reaction to museum exhibitions featuring ancient Egyptian artifacts in the 1960s or 2000s. But, the popular fascination with ancient Egypt is much older than that, and has lasted much longer than anyone could have predicted. This talk will focus on the impact that ancient Egypt has had on Western society, and how that cultural influence persists to this very day.

Bob Andresen is an independent scholar who has been studying the tomb chambers and conducting guided tours of them for the past 14 years. He is the President of the Chicago Chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt, and serves on the ARCE National Board as Chapter Council Representative. Prior to his retirement, he spent 40 years in the broadcast news industry as a reporter, writer and producer.
