Chicago is one of the few cities in the world that is home to three collections of Egyptian antiquities: The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Field Museum. The Oriental Institute was founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted, the first American Egyptologist, with the financial support of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Within a few years of the founding of each of these museums, however, they all depended upon James Henry Breasted to guide their acquisitions. In this lecture by Emily Teeter, Research Associate and Special Exhibits Coordinator, Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago will discuss Breasted’s vision for the Oriental Institute and the origins and interconnections between all three Chicago collections, and recount some of the colorful stories of how Breasted brought Egypt to Chicago.

Founded in 1890, the University of Chicago celebrates 125 Years of Inquiry and Impact. The anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on our history, our community past and present, and the founding principles that continue to guide our direction. In celebration the Oriental Institute presents this lecture on the history of our collection.
