Since the 2001 reestablishment of offical diplomatic ties with Afghanistan, the United States Embassy in Kabul and the State Department have engaged in cultural diplomacy and cultural preservation projects to improve relations and incrase mutual understanding between the two nations. Projects cover a broad range of Afghanistan's rich and diverse cultural heritage, including the restoration of historic sites and monuments across the country and the preservation, through documentation of intagible heritage traditions in poetry and music.
