Ancient Anatolia: A Journey To Turkey

Sept 28: Day 1 USA/Turkey

Depart Chicago in the late afternoon on Lufthansa German Airlines for Istanbul, via Frankfurt. (Meals in Flight)

Sept 29: Day 2, Istanbul

We arrive in Istanbul in the early afternoon and transfer to our hotel in the historic Sultan Ahmet area. In the late afternoon we join our lecturer for a briefing on the program and background on Turkish history and culture. Dinner at our hotel. Overnight at the Aya Sophia Hotel. (Meals in Flight,/D)

Sept 30: Day 3, Istanbul

Walking tour of the Sultan Ahmet area, including the Sultan Ahmet ("Blue") mosque, and the Hippodrome. We walk to Topkapi where we tour the fantastic collections of the palace museum, including the harem. Lunch at Topkapi; Dinner in the fishermen's district of Kumkapi. Overnight at the Armada Hotel. Oct 1: Day 4, Istanbul

Our day begins at Aya Sofia, the great monument of Emperor Justinian. We continue to the Archaeological Museum whose collections document the rich history of Turkey. Late afternoon visit to the covered bazaar. After dinner, we have a cruise on the Bosphorus. Our boat leaves us at Haydarpasa station where we board our deluxe sleeper train to Ankara. Overnight on the train. (B/L/D)

Oct 2: Day 5, Ankara

We tour the modern capital of Turkey, including the Ataturk memorial and the citadel. Afternoon check in at the Ankara Hilton. Lunch at the hotel. Afternoon at leisure. Dinner in Ankara. Overnight at the Ankara Hilton. (B/L/D)

Oct 3: Day 6, Ankara/Gordion

We drive to Gordion to see the tumulus tomb of a Phrygian king, perhaps the famed king Midas. Return to Ankara for lunch and a visit to the Anatolian Civilizations Museum. Dinner and overnight at the Ankara Hilton. (B/L/D)

Oct 4: Day 7, Alaca Hüyük/Hattusas/Yazilikaya/Cappadocia

Morning departure for the Hittite capital Hattusas at modern Bogazköy, also visiting the shrines at Yazilikaya and the Bronze Age tombs at Alaca Hüyük. Lunch in Bogazköy. Evening arrival in Cappadocia. Dinner and overnight at the Cappadocia Lodge, Göreme. (B/L/D)

Oct 5: Day 8, Cappadocia

Full day tour of the incredible landscapes of Cappadocia including the early Christian rock-cut churches in Göreme. Overnight at the Cappadocia Lodge in Göreme. (B/L/D)

Oct 6: Day 9, Cappadocia/Kanesh

We begin our day with a visit to Kültepe, ancient Kanesh, the site of the Assyrian trade colony of the 2nd millennium B.C. Afterward, we continue to the underground city of Kaymakl¹. Overnight at the Cappadocia Lodge, Göreme. (B/L/D)

Oct 7: Day 10, Acemhöyük/Güzelyurt/Kestel Mine/Cilician Gates/Adana

We visit the ruins of the palace of the Assyrian trade colony period at Acemhöyük, then see the beautiful valley and rock cut church at Güzelyurt. Lunch in an old monastery at Güzelyurt. In the afternoon, we visit Kestel Mine, where Oriental Institute Professor Aslihan Yener has discovered a major source of tin which fueled the ancient Bronze Age. We drive south through the Cilician Gates to Adana. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Seyhan in Adana. (B/L/D/)

Oct 8: Day 11, Karatepe/Antakya

Our day begins at the beautiful Neo-Hittite site of Karatepe with its many orthostats and sphinxes still in situ . Late afternoon arrival in Antakya, ancient Antioch. Dinner in Antioch, overnight at the Büyük Antakya Hotel. (B/L/D)

Oct 9: Day 12, Antakya

We start the morning with a visit to the Hatay Museum, with special emphasis upon the gallery that exhibits finds from the Oriental Institute excavations in the Amuq in the 1930s. A high point of our trip is our visit with Professor Yener and her staff at the Oriental Institute excavations in the Amuq. Overnight at the Büyük Antakya Hotel. (B/L/D)

Oct 10: Day 13, Antakya/Adiyaman

We drive north to visit the Neo-Hittite site of Yesemek; a hill littered with half- completed sculptures. We continue through Adiyaman in preparation for our visit to the mountain. Lunch at a local restaurant in Kahraman Maras, dinner at the Hotel Nemrut Mountain. Overnight at the Euphrat Hotel. (B/L/D)

Oct 11: Day 14, Nemrut Dagi/Malatya/Istanbul

Among the experiences of a lifetime is a visit to the hill-top mausoleum of King Antiochus at Nemrut Dagi. The great mound of gravel is flanked by colossal statues of the king and the gods. After our visit, we drive to Malatya for our late afternoon flight to Istanbul. Farewell dinner this evening at the Sarniç Restaurant. Overnight at the Four Seasons Hotel. (B/L/D)

Oct 12: Day 15, Istanbul

We begin our day with a visit to the basilica of Khora with its famous mosaics and frescoes. Lunch at Cafe Khora. Afternoon is at leisure for you to return to the bazaar, to revisit museums, or to just relax. Dinner and overnight at the Four Seasons Hotel. (B/L/D)

Oct 13: Day 16, Istanbul/Homeward

Early morning transfer to the airport for our flight homeward. (B, Meals in Flight)
