The Göltepe / Kestel Project

INTRODUCTION

Aslihan Yener is the director of excavations at Göltepe / Kestel in Turkey. This project is an investigation of a Bronze Age mining district and the associated town where metallurgical installations, including evidence for tin smelting have been discovered. This research has generated intense interest among archaeologists and historians because heretofore the source of Near Eastern Bronze Age tin has been unknown. Yener, trained in archaeology and art history at Columbia University, has become a leading authority on ancient metallurgical technology. Her research is technically innovative and promises to revolutionize our perceptions of ancient metallurgical technology and trade.
