"Scientists find 6,200-year-old parasite egg" was the headline to a recent Associated Press news article featuring the work of Oriental Institute Director Gil Stein at Tell Zeidan in Syria. Dr. Stein co-authored a paper on "Prehistoric schistosomiasis parasite found in the Middle East" published online in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. The article discusses the presence of a parasitic flatwrom egg from samples taken near the pelvis of human skeletal remains. The story was also picked up by the Washington Post, Science Magazine, Science Daily, Reuters, Medical Xpress, The Conversation, Business Insider, and the University of Chicago News. Articles on the excavations at Tell Zeidan appeared in the Oriental Institute News & Notes 203 (Fall 2009) as well as the Oriental Institute Annual Report 2010-2011 and 2009-2010.
