Alain Bresson, Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor, Department of Classics and Department of History, a world leader in ancient economy, has won the American Historical Association’s James Henry Breasted Prize for 2017, for his 2016 book The Making of the Ancient Greek Economy: Institutions, Markets, and Growth in the City-States. Dr. Bresson has been a principal collaborator in the Humanities Division and has been a very active participant in the intellectual life of the Oriental Institute. Named after our founder, this highly-competitive prize obviously has special resonance.  The James Henry Breasted Prize, established in 1985, is awarded for the best book each year in any field of history, in any region of the world, before 1000 CE.
