Larry Stager, Dorot Professor of the Archaeology of Israel, Emeritus, Harvard University, died on December 29th after a home accident. He would have been 75 years old on January 5, 2018. Professor Stager was a faculty member in the Oriental Institute, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and the College between 1973 and 1986 — first as an Instructor (1973-4), then as an Assistant (1974-6), Associate (1976–1985), and finally full Professor (1985-6) — before leaving the University to join the faculty of Harvard in 1986 as the inaugural Dorot Professor of the Archaeology of Israel; he retired from Harvard in 2012. Many of our faculty, staff, former students, and members who were here in the 80s will of course remember him from his time at Chicago. He also served as Harvard dissertation adviser to David Schloen and James Osborne, and was well known to our other faculty members who studied at Harvard during his tenure there. He will be missed. Further information can be found in his New York Times obituary and In Memoriam: Lawrence Stager (1943–2017).
